Donny, a former amateur national motocross athlete and manager at his fathers family restaurant, sustained injuries after a unfortunate snowmobile accident. While riding his snowmobile, he was thrown from the sled which ultimately landed on top of him. This resulted in the crushing injury of his neck and chest. His spinal cord was stretched to the point of needing a fusion of C5 to C6 into T1 of his back. Luckily, the spinal cord was not fully severed but left him with paralysis of the left arm and both legs.
After being told he would never walk again, Donny has set his mind to once again put his two feet on the ground and regain his independence. He is determined to reach that goal with your help! No matter the donation size, you will be giving Donny a true step in the right direction of reaching his dream to walk again.
We have an extraordinary chance to make a difference in the quality of his life moving forward, and what he is able to accomplish with the right tools.
The Exoskeleton is the latest therapeutic medical device that would greatly enhance the quality of Donny’s life dramatically. It’s essentially a walking assistance system that uses powered leg attachments to enable quadriplegics to stand upright and walk. The system is powered by a backpack battery, and is controlled by a remote which detects and enhances the user’s movements. The FDA clearance confirms use to reverse muscle atrophy, increase circulation and improve range of motion, as well as reducing spasms which can curb costly medications.
Along with the Exoskeleton, stem cell surgery can help Donny reach his recovery goal. Stem cell therapy and replacement in spinal cord injury patients have shown great possibilities of spinal cord repair. Stem cells are characterized by self-renewal and their ability to become any cell in an organism. Promising results have been obtained in experimental models with this type of treatment.
As expected, sophisticated medical technology and treatment doesn’t come easy. Medical insurance, government agencies, and the like, unfortunately do not cover such critical necessities. However, Donny truly needs this equipment and treatment–now. It not only supports each struggling step in Donny’s recovery, it promotes good health to face the challenging road ahead, and offers him hope for independence, eventually.
Donny has chosen to fundraise with HelpHOPELive in part because HelpHOPELive assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for donors. Donors can be sure that funds donated will be used only to pay or reimburse medically-related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the Donate Now button.
